They show how shared decision-making and collaboration lead to positive outcomes for everyone involved. Cooperatives have been instrumental in poverty alleviation and wealth creation in many parts of the world. For instance, the Amul cooperative in India transformed the dairy industry by empowering small-scale farmers, leading to increased incomes and economic stability in rural areas. Similarly, Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom’s research on community-managed resources highlighted how cooperatives can sustainably manage resources and improve livelihoods by promoting local governance and shared benefits.

Celebrating the International Year of Cooperatives helps students and families understand the power of working together to create positive change. When people collaborate, they can achieve extraordinary things. Whether you’re a student, teacher, parent, or community leader, embracing cooperative values can foster empathy, respect, and shared success. Let’s make 2025 a year to remember by spreading the spirit of cooperation far and wide.

Together, we can make a lasting difference, one small cooperative effort at a time.

A detailed toolkit on how schools can celebrate the International Year of Cooperatives 2025 is coming soon!

A Celebration Toolkit for Schools: International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025

The United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology to raise awareness about how the world works at its tiniest levels. Quantum science explores how tiny particles, smaller than atoms, behave in surprising ways. While it may seem like a difficult subject, it can be made fun, accessible, and exciting for everyone with the right approach. This special year offers a perfect opportunity for schools, teachers, parents, and students to explore these fascinating ideas with simple and engaging activities.

What is Quantum Science?

Quantum science is the study of the tiniest building blocks of everything around us. Imagine a world so small that you can’t see it even with an ordinary microscope! In this tiny world, particles like electrons and photons do things that seem strange but fascinating when compared to what we see every day. For example, a particle can be in two places at once or even pass through objects! Light, for example, can act both like a tiny ball and a wave, similar to how water ripples spread out when you drop a stone into a pond. Understanding quantum science helps us create cool technologies like phones, hospital scanners, and super-fast computers!

Here’s how each group can take part and bring quantum science to life this year.

For Schools

Curiosity Wall: Set up a dedicated space on a school wall where fun facts and questions about the tiniest building blocks of nature are displayed. Examples like “Did you know particles can be in two places at once?” can spark curiosity. Encourage students to add their own fun facts and questions.

Reading Time: Share simple articles from children’s newspapers such as *Student Edge* that explain concepts like how light behaves or how small particles move. Follow up with class discussions where students share their thoughts.

Student Presentations: Let older students create and present simple projects where they explain scientific concepts using easy models and drawings for younger students.

For Teachers

Story Time with a Twist: Read illustrated books that explain complex ideas in simple ways. Encourage students to write their own creative stories about how the smallest parts of the universe work, combining imagination and science.

Explain Simply: Use relatable examples like ripples in water, soap bubbles, and reflections in a mirror to explain concepts like waves and particles.

Cross-Subject Connections: Integrate quantum ideas into other subjects, such as using art classes to create visual representations of scientific ideas.

Hands-on Models and Collaborative Projects: Encourage students to work together on creating visual projects such as posters, presentations, or mini-documentaries on how tiny particles behave.

Science Challenges: Host classroom quizzes or science fairs where students can showcase creative ideas related to quantum science concepts.

For Parents

Read Together: Explore easy-to-understand science books or magazines together and discuss the ideas after reading. Choose books like Quantum Physics for Kids that break down complex ideas.

Curiosity Box: Create a ‘Science Curiosity Box’ where kids can drop science-related questions they think about and then explore these topics during family time.

Watch and Learn: Watch engaging science documentaries or animated videos explaining how small particles work. Encourage children to ask questions afterward.

Family Science Night: Plan an evening where everyone tries hands-on science activities, such as bending light through water glasses or creating a homemade rainbow with a hose. Such activities encourage analytical thinking and help children visualize more complex phenomenon later on in life.

Encourage Questions: Foster curiosity by allowing children to ask questions freely and guiding them toward finding answers together.

For Students

Fact of the Day: Share a fascinating science fact every morning during school announcements or on a classroom bulletin board. You can begin by sharing one fact every time you see your friend.

Craft Projects: Make models of simple science concepts, such as atoms using clay or drawing colorful posters explaining how light behaves. Ask your teachers for suggestions and have your projects evaluated by your science teachers and peers.

Discussion Groups: Form small groups where students can share what they’ve learned and explore topics together, helping each other understand complex ideas better. Your school science club seniors or your science teachers can facilitate these discussions.

Ask a Scientist: Write letters or emails to local scientists, asking them fun and curious questions about the world of small particles.

Play Science Games: Play board games or card games where the rules mimic the behavior of tiny particles, making learning interactive and fun.

Why Understanding Quantum Science Matters!

Learning about how the universe works at its smallest scale helps us better understand the world. Quantum science plays a key role in modern innovations, such as faster computers, stronger materials, and even better medical technology. Exploring these ideas encourages curiosity and helps young minds appreciate how science can solve real-world challenges.

By celebrating the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, families and schools can create exciting learning opportunities that make complex ideas fun and approachable. Many schools brought their students to explore the fair, and several teachers showed interest in StudentEdge. Miss Pratiksha Anand, a teacher who picked up a sample copy earlier, came back to share how much she loved it. She called it “a great resource for students—fun, informative, and distraction-free.” She even asked about getting subscriptions for her entire school!

A Celebration of Books and Learning

The Pune Book Festival 2024, organized by the National Book Trust (NBT), was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. With over 600 stalls, there were books in many Indian languages for people of all ages and interests. It was truly a book lover’s paradise.

A highlight of the event was the Pune Literature Festival, held from December 20 to December 22. This part of the fair had over 25 sessions featuring more than 60 authors, poets, journalists, and thinkers. These sessions, held at the Fergusson College amphitheater, covered all kinds of cool topics and gave the audience lots to think about.

Fun and Creativity for Kids

The festival wasn’t just about books; it was also about having fun and learning in new ways. On school days, he wakes up early in the morning at 5:30 AM, reaches school, and returns home by early afternoon. His afternoon and evening routines include watching TV, taking a nap, playing badminton, completing homework, and reading. This early encouragement helped him develop a lifelong love for reading. Parents and teachers can take a cue from this by providing a nurturing environment that encourages curiosity and learning among the kids.

5. Consistent Effort

Consistently putting in effort contributes to success. Advait’s regular participation and high performance in the India’s Got Edge Stars competition show the importance of perseverance. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, from the challenges faced in modern education to the various initiatives undertaken by the school to foster a culture of reading among students. This essay delves into the key themes discussed during the interview, offering valuable lessons for children, parents, teachers, and school authorities.

The Importance of Reading

Reading is foundational to a child’s skills and overall development. Ms. Mishra emphasized that reading is one of the most important habits a child can inculcate. She explained that reading not only enhances vocabulary and language skills but also develops critical thinking, empathy, and imagination. Through reading, children are exposed to diverse perspectives and experiences, which broadens their understanding of the world.

However, Ms. Mishra acknowledged a decline in reading habits among children, attributing this to distractions such as the internet and visual media. She noted that while technology offers many benefits, it also poses challenges, as children may prefer quick, visual content over the slower, more reflective process of reading. Despite these challenges, the importance of reading remains paramount. Ms. Mishra pointed out that reading enhances cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving and analytical thinking. It also provides a wealth of information and stimulates the imagination, aiding in the development of cognitive skills.

Ms. Mishra also highlighted the psychological benefits of reading, noting that completing a book can boost self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment. She emphasized that the habit of reading can be a lifelong source of pleasure and knowledge, contributing to personal growth and mental well-being.

Fostering a Reading Culture in Schools

At Bal Bhawan School, several initiatives have been taken to encourage reading among students. One such program involves children spending 15 minutes reading daily. This initiative aims to make reading a regular part of the students’ routine, helping to cultivate a habit that they can carry into adulthood.

For younger students, reading corners are set up in their classes with a variety of books to choose from, fostering an early love for reading. These corners provide a quiet and comfortable space where children can explore books at their own pace. The school’s library is designed to be an interactive space where students can explore and discuss books. Celebrating Authors Day every month is one of the initiatives to foster a deeper connection with literature. During these events, students learn about different authors, their works, and their contributions to literature, which helps to ignite their interest in reading.

The school also integrates library activities with classroom learning and extracurricular activities, making reading a central part of the educational experience. Ms. Mishra spoke about the challenges educators face in modern times and the need for adaptability and continuous learning. Teachers are encouraged to update their knowledge and prepare thoroughly for classes, highlighting the role of continuous learning. The school has a book club called “Bookworm,” which encourages reading among both students and teachers. This club provides a platform for book discussions, reviews, and recommendations, fostering a community of readers within the school.

Role of Parents in Promoting Reading

Parents play a crucial role in modeling reading behavior. Ms. Mishra observed that parents often tell their children to read, but the children do not listen. She noted that parents may not themselves read in front of their children, and children often emulate what they see. To address this issue, the school organizes workshops to educate parents on reading and how to encourage it at home. These workshops aim to help parents understand why they should read, how and what they could read, and how they could model reading behavior for their kids.

Ms. Mishra stressed the importance of creating a reading-friendly environment at home. This includes having a variety of books available, setting aside dedicated reading time, and discussing books with children. By demonstrating their own love for reading, parents can inspire their children to develop a similar passion.

Personal Reading Experiences and Recommendations

Ms. Mishra shared her personal journey with reading, influenced by her father, an acclaimed newsreader. Her early exposure to reading has had a lasting impact on her, highlighting the long-term influence of familial reading habits. She recalled fond memories of her father reading stories to her when she was young, which instilled in her a love for stories and books.

She recommended several books for children, emphasizing classics and contemporary favorites, such as Enid Blyton and Ruskin Bond. Ms. Mishra expressed a preference for physical books over digital ones because of the tactile experience they offer. She explained that holding a physical book, turning its pages, and even the smell of the paper are integral parts of the reading experience. However, she acknowledged the coexistence of print and digital media, emphasizing that the purpose of reading should guide the choice. She noted that while digital books are convenient and accessible, they cannot fully replicate the experience of reading a physical book.

Creative and Fun Engagement with Reading

To make reading a dynamic and interactive experience, Ms. Mishra encouraged creative engagement through fun writing prompts and discussions around books. The school encourages discussions and activities around books, making reading a dynamic and interactive experience. For instance, students might be asked to write about what they would do if they could be invisible for a day, sparking their creativity and making the reading experience more engaging.

The school also organizes events such as book fairs, author visits, and reading competitions to make reading a more social and enjoyable activity. These events provide opportunities for students to interact with authors, discover new books, and share their reading experiences with peers.

Conclusion

This conversation with Ms. Anubha Mishra reveals valuable insights into the importance of reading, the role of educators and parents, and the myriad ways in which a reading culture can be cultivated among children. By incorporating these practices, we can inspire a love for reading that will benefit students throughout their lives. Reading is not just a habit but a lifelong friend, offering endless opportunities for growth, learning, and enjoyment. The combined efforts of schools, parents, and the community can create an environment where reading thrives, ensuring that children develop the skills and passion needed to become lifelong readers.

StudentEdge is delighted to bring Ms. Mishra’s insightful words to our readers. Her passion for reading and her vision of a nation united through literature resonate deeply with our mission. As we continue to explore the world of reading through books and newspaper, we invite readers of all ages to join us on this enriching journey. This practice highlights the importance of integrating reading into daily routines, as it can significantly enhance cognitive abilities and provide a much-needed mental break.

StudentEdge: A Source of Motivation and Learning

Anaya’s enthusiasm for the StudentEdge newspaper is another aspect worth noting. One such inspiring young reader is Rishika Kathuria, a student of class eight from Delhi Public School, Vadodara.

Recently, Rakshit Mohan, a researcher at StudentEdge, had the pleasure of conversing with Rishika about her reading habits, her favorite books, and the impact of the StudentEdge newspaper on her life. What unfolded was an enlightening and engaging discussion that truly underscored the importance of reading in personality development.

A Day in the Life of a Voracious Reader

Rishika is not just any reader; she is a disciplined reader. Her day during school vacations is a perfect blend of leisure and learning. “During the school days, there was a proper routine set for me,” she shares. “But during summer vacations, I woke up at 10, sometimes took breakfast … read books, played the flute, did gardening, went out to play with friends, and then ended the day by writing in my diary.”

This structured yet flexible approach allows Rishika to indulge in her hobbies without feeling overwhelmed. She dedicates about an hour each day to reading the StudentEdge newspaper, followed by additional reading time in the afternoon. It’s a testament to her commitment to personal growth and learning.

The Power of Fiction and Non-Fiction

When asked about her reading preferences, Rishika enthusiastically responded, “fiction!” She is currently engrossed in the third volume of the Shiva Trilogy, a series that has captivated her imagination. However, she also recognizes the value of non-fiction. Her upcoming reading list includes “Mindset” by Carol Dweck. She also has “Malgudi Days,” a recommendation from StudentEdge, on her reading list.

“Mindset is a good book because it contains the lifetime insights of a brilliant researcher,” Rakshit added. “Carol Dweck is a psychologist who has devoted her life to studying people with different mindsets. There’s much wisdom packed into such books.” Non-fiction books, despite their dense concepts, often use stories to make learning enjoyable and easy to understand.

This blend of fiction and non-fiction not only broadens Rishika’s horizons but also ensures a well-rounded intellectual development.

Recommendations and Reflections

Rishika’s love for books extends beyond her reading list. She actively recommends books to others, with “Atomic Habits” by James Clear being a favorite. “It’s also a non-fiction book that makes you give up bad habits and inculcate good ones,” she notes. “James Clear uses very simple language, making it easy to understand.” The StudentEdge team was delighted to note that Rishika finished reading the book when she was in class 6.

Her journey with books began at the tender age of 10, when her mother gifted her first book to her. Since then, there’s been no looking back. She recalls, “My friends were very engaged in reading books, and I used to observe them keenly. But I thought they were wasting their time. Then, when I was 10, my mother gifted me a book, and I got engaged in it too.”

The Role of the StudentEdge Newspaper

As a regular reader of the StudentEdge newspaper, Rishika finds immense value in its content. “My favorite page is the life skill page because there are always new topics that are never repeated,” she shares. The newspaper helps her stay updated with current affairs, which she proudly discusses with her parents and teachers.

“The newspaper has really helped me, especially in Social Sciences and History classes,” she said. “When fresh news comes related to a concept we are learning, I take part in class discussions and express my thoughts.”

Rishika’s commitment to the StudentEdge Newspaper is clear in her daily routine. She has made a promise to herself to read at least one page of the newspaper every day and complete three worksheets. This self-motivation is a key factor in her consistent engagement with the newspaper.

Suggestions for Improvement

Despite her overall satisfaction with the StudentEdge newspaper, Rishika has some thoughtful suggestions for improvement. She proposes adding a mythology section to help children learn about their heritage. However, she acknowledges the challenge of relating mythology to the latest developments in news. The suggestion, though, reflects her desire to contribute to continuously improving her favorite newspaper.

Celebrating National Reading Day

National Reading Day, celebrated in honor of the library man of India, PN Panikkar, holds special significance for Rishika. She plans to read new books and make highlighted notes to implement what she learns. “More awareness should be spread regarding this important day,” she asserts, emphasizing the need for a reading culture among the youth.

Inspiring the Generation She Belongs To

When asked what advice she would give to her peers who do not read as much, Rishika’s response was wise beyond her years. “There are many ways to develop your personality. Reading is a very important milestone, but try other ways if you don’t feel good about reading. You have the right to choose your own life,” she advises.

Her words reflect a mature understanding of personal growth and the importance of finding one’s own path. For those who do read, she encourages a balanced approach to fiction and non-fiction, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Conclusion

StudentEdge’s conversation with Rishika Kathuria was a delightful journey into the mind of a young reader who is passionate about learning and growth. Her disciplined approach to reading, her appreciation for both fiction and non-fiction, and her commitment to the StudentEdge Newspaper are truly inspiring.

Rishika’s story is a reminder of the profound impact that reading can have on personal development. It encourages young readers to embrace the habit of reading and highlights the importance of nurturing this habit from an early age. As Rishika continues to explore new books and ideas, she sets an example for her peers, proving that the world of books is a treasure trove of knowledge, wisdom, and endless possibilities.

StudentEdge team wishes Rishika all the success in her life and hopes that more and more young minds understand the value of reading the way Rishika does.

Embracing the Benefits of Yoga: A Gift to Students from Our Rich Cultural Heritage

As the world celebrates the International Day of Yoga, it's a perfect time to reflect on the profound benefits yoga can bring to our children. This special day, celebrated on 21st June, was proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and recognised by the United Nations in 2014. It's more than just a day to perform yoga; it's a celebration of a practice that has enriched lives since ancient times.

Let us glance at the significance and history of yoga in its relation to our culture and then move on to explore the benefits that the practice has in store for young children.

The Significance and History of Yoga

Yoga's roots lie deep in the ancient civilisation of India. The earliest signs of yoga were discovered in the Indus-Sarasvati civilisation, with artefacts depicting figures in yogic postures. Throughout the Vedic period, yoga evolved from ritual disciplines into a structured practice aimed at achieving spiritual realisation.

Key texts like the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali laid down the philosophical foundations of yoga, emphasising paths like Karma Yoga (action), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), and Jnana Yoga (knowledge). In a later period, Hatha Yoga emerged, focusing on physical postures and breath control.

In the modern era, yoga's global journey began, thanks to influential Indian teachers like Swami Vivekananda. Today, yoga is a universal practice, appreciated for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits.

Why Yoga is Essential for Children

Academic Advantages

1. Improved Concentration: Yoga helps children develop better focus and attention by teaching them to concentrate on their breathing and bodily movements. This mindfulness practice translates to improved concentration in academic tasks, enabling students to stay focused on lessons, assignments, and exams, thereby enhancing their overall academic performance.

2. Enhanced Memory: Practices like mindfulness and breath control in yoga enhance cognitive functions by reducing stress and increasing mental clarity. This improved brain function helps students retain information more effectively, aiding in better recall during exams and a deeper understanding of learned material, ultimately boosting their academic success.

3. Stress Management: The pressures of school can be overwhelming for children, leading to anxiety and burnout. Yoga offers tools like deep breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques that help manage stress. These practices calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of well-being, making it easier for students to handle academic pressures.

4. Better Classroom Behaviour: By promoting emotional regulation, yoga helps children manage their emotions and reactions better. This leads to improved behaviour in the classroom, as students become more patient, less impulsive, and more cooperative. A calmer, more focused student body creates a positive learning environment for both teachers and students.

Long-Term Benefits of Early Introduction to Yoga

1. Healthy Habits: Early exposure to yoga instils healthy habits, leading to a disciplined, balanced lifestyle. Regular practice encourages consistent physical activity, mindfulness, and self-care, forming a foundation for lifelong wellness and healthy routines.

2. Emotional Resilience: Yoga teaches children to cope with challenges by promoting mindfulness and relaxation techniques. This builds emotional resilience, helping them manage stress, recover from setbacks, and maintain a positive outlook on life.

3. Self-Awareness, Confidence, and Social Skills: Through yoga, children become more aware of their bodies and emotions, boosting self-esteem and confidence. Group yoga activities enhance communication, collaboration, and empathy, improving peer relationships and fostering a supportive social environment.

4. Lifelong Wellness: Yoga sets the foundation for lifelong physical and mental health. By establishing healthy habits early, children are encouraged to continue wellness practices into adulthood, promoting sustained physical fitness and mental well-being.

5. Creativity and Imagination: Yoga stimulates creative thinking and problem-solving skills. The practice encourages children to explore their imaginations and think outside the box, fostering an inventive and imaginative mindset.

6. Balanced Development: Yoga promotes holistic development by addressing physical, mental, and emotional growth. This comprehensive approach ensures children develop into well-rounded individuals, capable of managing various aspects of their lives effectively.

Practical Implementation in Schools and Homes

Yoga in Schools:

1. Integrating Yoga Sessions: Schools can embed short yoga sessions into daily routines, such as morning assemblies or before exams. These sessions enhance physical flexibility, improve posture, and promote relaxation. Consistent practice fosters a positive atmosphere and helps students manage stress.

2. Teacher Training: Equipping teachers with basic yoga techniques empowers them to lead sessions effectively. They can incorporate simple stretches, breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices during class transitions. Well-trained teachers model healthy habits and encourage student participation.

3. Designated Spaces: Allocating quiet corners or outdoor areas for yoga practice encourages regular engagement. These spaces serve as sanctuaries for students to unwind, focus, and recharge. By emphasizing mindfulness and wellness, schools create a holistic learning environment.

Yoga at Home:

1. Family Yoga Sessions: Encouraging families to practice yoga together fosters bonding and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Shared sessions create a positive environment, strengthen relationships, and allow everyone to reap the benefits of yoga.

2. Start with Breathing Exercises: Begin with simple breathing techniques like diaphragmatic breathing or alternate nostril breathing. These practices enhance lung capacity, reduce stress, and improve focus. Remember not to strain; consistency matters more than intensity.

3. Leverage Online Resources: Explore kid-friendly yoga apps and videos. Platforms like Cosmic Kids Yoga offer engaging sessions tailored for children. Practicing at home ensures flexibility, convenience, and regularity.

Conclusion

At StudentEdge, we believe that yoga, much like reading, has a significant role to play in students' quest for success and happiness. Discipline, which gets enhanced by regular practice of yoga, can help create a nation of readers who realise the value of reading in crafting a well-rounded personality.

India's rich cultural heritage of yoga offers invaluable benefits that can enrich our children's lives. As we celebrate International Day of Yoga, let's embrace this ancient practice and integrate it into our daily routines. By doing so, we not only honour a time-tested tradition but also empower our children with the tools they need for a balanced, healthy, and fulfilling life. Yoga is a gift that keeps on giving, nurturing the body, mind, and spirit, and setting the foundation for lifelong wellness and happiness.

Celebrating the National Reading Day: A Tribute to the Legacy of P.N. Panicker">
Let’s picture a place where everyone loves to read. In every corner of India, people - both young and old - share the fun of reading. P.N. Panicker dreamt of creating this reading utopia. He is known as the Father of the Library Movement in India. Every year, on June 19th, we celebrate National Reading Day. This day is special because it honours Panicker’s dream of making reading a part of everyone’s life. So, come along! Let’s find out more about Panicker’s dream and why reading is such an exciting thing to do.

Historical Overview

National Reading Day remembers Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker. He died on June 19, 1995. Panicker started as a teacher. He founded the Sanatan Dharma Library in Kerala. He worked hard to promote literacy. In 1945, he established the Kerala Granthashala Sangam (KGS). KGS began with 47 libraries. By 1956, it grew to over 6,000 libraries. Under his leadership, KGS won the UNESCO Krupsakaya Award in 1975.

Panicker’s work was not just about libraries. He also started the Kerala Association for Non-Formal Education and Development (KANFED). KANFED aimed to improve literacy rates and education in rural areas. Because of his efforts, Kerala has one of the highest literacy rates in India. This shows his vision and hard work.

The Importance of Reading

Reading is not just fun; it helps your brain. Scientists say that reading books often makes your brain work better. It can help you feel less worried. It can also help you understand other people’s feelings better. When you read different stories, you learn new ideas. You see how different people think and feel. This makes you kinder and more understanding of others. So, reading is good for both your mind and your heart!

Reading is good for your growth as well. It helps you learn new words. It also helps you focus better. Studies show that reading regularly makes your brain work better and reduces stress. Reading lets you see things from different points of view. As Descartes says, “The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest minds of past centuries.”

For students, reading is very helpful. It makes understanding things easier. It helps you think better and be more creative. In a world with many digital distractions, developing a reading habit is more important than ever.

Celebrating National Reading Day

National Reading Day is a splendid chance to love reading for both young and old. Here are some fun activities to celebrate:

1. Organise Reading Sessions: Families and schools can set aside time to read together. Pick books that interest different age groups. This way, everyone stays engaged. You can have these sessions in the living room, a classroom, or even outside in a park. Make it a cosy and fun time with snacks and comfy seating.

2. Storytelling Competitions: Encourage children to tell their favourite stories. This activity improves their speaking skills. It also boosts their confidence. Kids can practise at home and then share their stories with friends and family. You can even have small prizes for the best stories to make it more exciting. This will make kids eager to take part and share their favourite tales.

3. Reading Challenges: Set up reading challenges with rewards for completing books. This can motivate young readers to read more and explore various genres.

4. Book Exchanges: Organize a book exchange event where participants can swap books. This promotes the sharing of knowledge and introduces readers to new authors and genres.

5. Create a Home Library: Dedicate a space in your home to a mini-library. Encourage children to contribute by adding their favourite books.

6. Reading Corners: Set up cosy reading corners at home or in classrooms. A comfortable space can make reading a more enjoyable and regular activity.

7. Read Newspaper Every Day: For kids, it’s a great idea to read children’s newspapers. They are written in a way that is easy to understand and have stories that are interesting and fun. Plus, they include puzzles, comics, and activities that make reading even more enjoyable. So, try to read a children’s newspaper every day and enjoy all these awesome benefits!

The Role of Parents and Educators

Parents and educators play a crucial role in fostering a reading habit. Here are some tips:

1. Lead by Example: Show children that reading is enjoyable by reading books yourself. When they see you reading often, they’re more likely to pick up books too.

2. Discuss Books: Have conversations with children about the stories they read. Ask them about their favourite parts, characters, and what they learned from the book. This helps them think deeply about what they’ve read.

3. Incorporate Reading in Daily Routine: Make reading a regular part of the day. Choose a specific time, like before bedtime or after dinner, when everyone in the family reads quietly. Consistency helps make reading a natural and enjoyable habit.

4. Celebrate Reading Achievements: When children finish reading a book, celebrate their accomplishment. You can praise them for finishing the story or achieving a reading goal they set. This encouragement boosts their confidence and motivates them to keep reading.

Conclusion

National Reading Day celebrates the importance of reading and honours P.N. Panicker’s legacy. At StudentEdge, we share a similar vision to Panicker’s. Our goal is to inspire today’s readers to become tomorrow’s leaders. As we remember his work, let’s embrace Panicker’s powerful yet simple slogan ‘Read and grow.’ We should encourage a culture of reading. This will enrich our lives and society. By loving reading, we honour Panicker’s memory. We also invest in a brighter, more literate future.
